Alex's wife died at some point in late 1970s or early 1980s. According to Alex Hartman himself, acquisition of Hammer Valley Hydro by Walter Corporation eventually resulted in death of his wife, while when confronting Jeff Walter, he directly accuses Jeff of killing his wife; however according to S.N.W leadership, Alex's wife died before the company acquisition, whose death resulted in Alex's mental instability in the first place.

A Woodbox Urn with encrypted label of "Emily" is found both at the Hammer Valley Dam office and the Rosenthal's Villa, suggesting it was the wife's name.

According to Alex, his child who he considers the only one, also died around the same time as his wife.

Alex's son who he decided to give up for adoption, after he realised how bad of a father he was since the death of his wife. Alex decided to pretend he never had a son. It is unclear whether Alex really had two children, Eric Kleinmann even questioned Alex whether he had a second son, which Alex found very strange.

After Hammer Valley Hydro's bankruptcy, Hartman developed an obsession and deep hatred for Walter, blaming him for the bankruptcies of his own and numerous other companies the Walter Corporation acquired, and the circumstances in which the metro accident occurred. His actions throughout the game are dedicated to take revenge against Walter in a self-proclaimed crusade to "save the city from Walter".
