...One of the sources was supposed to be out here in the middle of nowhere, but the meters showed nothing. It felt exhausting to come such a long way without finding anything.

I wrote the coordinates down with a red pencil and drew a fish next to them. A red herring, after all. Or was it?

Looking back on it now, the source might have been buried so deep underground that the meters simply couldn't detect it, or maybe it was somewhere up in the sky...

My diving suit grew heavier with every passing second, the abyssal pressure threatening to crush me in the pitch black.

Suddenly, a single, blinding flash seared my eyes.

When my vision cleared, I found myself adrift inside a submerged concrete tunnel. The walls of the tunnel were covered in a brown, slimy matter that looked like it was leaking from cracks in the concrete ceiling. Sprouting from the muck on the floor were pulsing red anomalies.

They were like red, luminous trees under the water...

...Every step felt heavier and heavier, and that bright light at the end of the tunnel did not seem to get any closer.

It was almost impossible to avoid those glowing red trees that felt like they were made of electricity...

...He possessed such a charming and intelligent mind, paired with a remarkably kind heart. It made me sick to see someone like him end up this way, and the fact that I left so much unsaid between us just made the pain worse. After all the suffering we had endured, I refused to accept this.

I was the only one left who could finish what he started. There was no way I was backing down now...

...It seems to have affected him in exactly the same way it did Lloyd, though he does not seem to be fixated on teddy bears.

Lloyd loved buying teddy bears for his daughter so much that he started collecting them himself, and now that entire collection is gone. I wonder if Lloyd is hiding in a hole somewhere with his giant stash of stuffed animals, or if he is already dead.

It is hard to imagine how a man driven to such madness could survive alone in a world like this...

...I knew we had only scratched the surface, yet I felt we finally had a grasp on the reality of it.

From what I understood from his description, it has several layers, or maybe it is more like a gradient. It could even be a tunnel. You cannot walk it from end to end, but you can reach the center.

Theoretically, that means something else could walk from the far side to meet us in the middle, but nothing has shown up yet. We have attempted to transmit messages, receiving nothing but harsh noise in return.

I cannot help but wonder why they would engineer such a massive creation if they never intended to use it...

...I knew I could never speak a word of this to anyone, yet I felt a desperate need for the world to know about him, about what we were.\n\nPerhaps one day I will finally tell our story.

Maybe I should, even if no one is going to believe me.

Then again, maybe it is safer if no one believes a single word...

...I felt deeply sorry about what had happened to his daughter.

I could still see the sorrow lurking behind Lloyd's eyes, even if the rest of his mind was completely gone. I simply could not do it. I felt so powerless at that moment.

I could not bring myself to end his misery. I only stood and watched as he hobbled away, clutching a single teddy bear in his hand.

I knew that despite losing his sanity, he would probably survive and wander in this city for years, leaving those bears behind...

...The situation is becoming deeply problematic.

Alvar warned me it would come to this. We simply cannot know how many individuals the other side has influenced, particularly when they are all so careful to conceal their violent and cult-like behavior. To guarantee the safety of the Project, we may have no other option left but to initiate a purge...
