Walter arranged a suitable shelter for him at Castle Rock Island, where he would commit himself to search for a cure for the disease. In a journal Berg wrote, he chronicled his stages through the S.M.V infection. He first found a mushroom growing on his hand, and more began to grow on his body.  

He experimented and did test green and orange mushrooms, but was unable to find anything conclusive. Berg began to lose his memory, and was on the verge of a breakthrough, but succumbed to the virus while writing his last log, presumably dying or becoming vegetative.
