The company had eventually fallen into severe financial issues, and Hartman was forced to sell Hammer Valley Hydro.

Hartman almost closed the deal with a potential buyer, but they backed out at the last minute for unknown reasons. Hartman's only option remaining was to sell his company to the Walter Corporation.

The Walter Corporation allegedly mismanaged and disregarded maintenance of the dam, and ran the company itself into the bankruptcy in 1982.

After bankruptcy and total abandonment, lights at one point were spotted in the dam at night by nearby moonshiners. Eventually these unexplained lights disappeared, and the dam could be said to have been completely forgotten.

While traveling through the Reserve levels, the player can attempt to fix the Hammer Valley Dam. Doing this in game activates the power for the secret part of the SNW Bunker in the Bunker level later on.
