Other Side, also known as the Wasteland or the Black World, is a mysterious realm accessible in INFRA and Obenseuer games, that is an urban legend among the people of Obenseuer.
Overview
The realm is described as an underground world made out of walls and pipes, inhabited by big, shadow, Mörkö-like creatures and entities.[1] It is associated with an afterlife, as a place the people, or their souls, get stuck after death, or are being kept by something. For some being a comforting place to be,[2] for others an expression of screams and a feeling of pain.[3][4] Whispers of those people are supposedly heard from under the ground.[5]
When visited, mostly the only visible color from the light spectrum is red, leaving everything else is in the shades of gray or completely dark. Notably the living people on the surface are seen as emitting bright red light in the Other Side. Appearance of Green Mushrooms is also bright red, making them indistinguishable from actual Red Mushrooms.
Dead people appear in a shadow form with glowing red eyes, being near the remnants of their dead body from the surface. Player is able to talk with the dead to gather additional information and learn about their situation or feelings. While exploring the Other Side, player can find the Red Things that can help to reduce the Fungal Disease.
Other Side can be entered, to a various degrees, by consuming a special mixture[6] added to a coffee or a tea. Possession of a Black Amulet during the process appears to help the effects. An alternative way of entering the Other Side is using an OsRat device, that by utilizing the Black Amulet, can connect directly with the Other Side near the dead bodies or other entities present in the Other Side, like the Red Things.
Appearances
Other Side appears in INFRA on two notable occasions, once as a part of special coffee Mark can brew at the MulEx CoPan coffee machine and once after consuming a special tea given after contacting the Missing Dock guy.
In Obenseuer, a preview of the Other Side is seen during the intro, on the course of the game player acquires the OsRat device along an Black Amulet to enter the Other Side whenever they please and are near entities from that realm. Player may also enter an Other Side-like area when they clip through the map, falling into the void.
Layers
Other Side does not appear to be a singular plane, but rather a collection of transition states one can enter to a varying degree. People studying the Other Side, such as Father Tobias, determined that there are at least 5 layers of the Other Side.
Layer 1: Black Noise
The first layer into the Other Side, encountered mainly in INFRA.
The layer overlaps our world and is characterized by visible monochromatic light spectrum and a thick black fog. Certain entities can traverse this layer without otherwise be seen in our world.
In INFRA, Mark can enter the Black Noise on few occassions, while consuming a Special Coffee brewed by the MulEx CoPan coffee machine, or when drinking a Green Mushroom Drink left at Iva's birthday part in Turnip Hill.
In Obenseuer game, there is no clear distiction between Black Noise and Red Noise, and the characteristics of what would be considered Black Noise appear to be localized within specific map areas.
Layer 2: Red Noise
The second layer into the Other Side, encountered only in Obenseuer game.
As with the Black Noise layer, the Red Noise also overlaps our world. In addition of retainly primarily a monochromatic visuals, certain sources of light and Green Mushrooms appear bright red to human eye. The most notable characteristic of the Red Noise is a presence of red particles filling the space.
From within the Red Noise it is possible to encounter the shadow figures of deceased peoples and communicate with them, as this appears to be the place people are trapped in after their death. People that are still alive in our world, appear as large bright glowing orbs in the Red Noise. In the layer it is also possible to occassionally find Red Things, another, yet smaller, glowing orb-like entities that can be collected and help reduce Fungal Disease when done so. Certain aspects of the Red Noise appear to be able to leak into our world, like an audible breathing of certain shadow figures, or the signals OsRat picks up.
In Obenseuer game, the Player can enter the Red Noise when the OsRat device detects a shadow figure or a Red Thing. Player also should be able to enter the Red Noise when their Fungal Disease progression is advanced and they have consumed large quantities of Green Mushrooms. Leaving the vicinity of the shadow figures or the Red Things will disconnect the Player from the Red Noise back to our world.
Layer 3: Waste
The third layer into the Other Side, possibly encountered in both games.
The main characteristic of the Waste layer is a presence of strong deadly ionizing radiation, matching what is encountered in the Wasteland and Under Map. In those two areas, the Other Side is no longer overlapping our world, instead it is its own physical space one can explore freely without changing position in our world. These locations however are still filled with various items originating from our world, such as phones, metro trains, helmets or street lamps.
Layers 4 and 5
Not much is known about these further layers, and they have not been documented by other characters.
It is possible the area encountered in Deeply Insane quest in Obenseuer game is located in either of those layers. The area is characterized by an unknown rock-like or flesh-like solid ground with an open sky. This is the area where the Red Rocks are found and possibly naturally originate from.
Trivia
- In the prototype version of Obenseuer, during the original Other Side encounter in the Deekula B3 bathroom, a Shadow Woman could be found in the Other Side, standing behind the player, her appearance resembled Mörkö, with elongated fingers and stretched body parts, but without a mask, that is no longer present in the current version. Attempting to talk with the Shadow Woman would yield a response containing a binary code,[7] which once decoded, reads "Error. Please retry."
