Fungal Disease Outbreak was a major infectious disease outbreak within the area of Stalburg Region.

Background

Main article: Stalburg Mushroom Virus

Between the 1977[1] and 1986 the Stolland Nuclear Weapons was developing the S.M.V Project, a type of targeted bioengineered weapon.[2] Green Mushrooms infected with the virus become deadly to humans and animals,[3] causing the mushrooms to grow on, and inside, the living bodies, slowly consuming them.[4]

The virus was developed at the S.N.W Bunker, where on 10th of August, 1986[5] a local outbreak forced evacuation and abandonment of the bunker.[6] At the same time, two of scientists working in the bunker had escaped, one of them being Xeander Berg, who unknowingly at the time, was infected with the Fungal Disease.[7] Xeander Berg made contact with Jeff Walter, who at the time was himself hiding in the Rosenthal's Villa, and who helped to keep Berg hidden as well, eventually organizing a hideout for Berg at the Castle Rock island.[8]

Speculative Information

Green Mushrooms can be found in the bathroom of the guest house at the Villa premises, possibly suggesting that Xeander Berg stayed in the guest house a considerable amount to leave traces of S.M.V infected spores at the location.

It is possible that the Xeander Berg himself caused the S.M.V outbreak at the bunker, as he needed a way to disable ventilation system to escape via the vent shafts. A unique green-colored barrel, now overgrown with Green Mushrooms, is also seen seemingly-thrown into the public pool at the residential area.

Outbreak

Before the August of 2016, mushroom farmers from Turnip Hill started a mushroom farming operation on the outskirts of Turnip Hill, in a cave with a direct connection Rosenthal's Villa premises. According to Blue Mr. Duck,[9] they were the first to discover the S.M.V infected mushrooms. Several people in Turnip Hill already got infected with the disease, such as Kevin J. Herts, and multiple more people have already died, leaving the Undertaker Krievs to dispose of their bodies and get infected herself.[10] Mushroom grown by the farmers were of the best quality, most likely due to increased potency caused by S.M.V infection, making them one of the most desirable sources of mushrooms in Stalburg,[11] such as by the moonshiners of the Castle Rock,[8] who further distribute mushroom alcohol products.

In the early 2017, the first reported cases of the Fungal Disease Outbreak surfaced, making the public and the scientific community learn about it for the first time. On 13th of February of the same year, the government announced opening the first quarantine zone inside Obenseuer district, with further plans to open another quarantine zone at the Whiprock Island.[12] Among the areas the most disease cases were reported, was the Obenseuer itself and the Ulhu. To control the outbreak, the government also put together a Fungal Treatment Unit, that works together with other emergency authorities, and mandatory health screenings at the Stalburg International Airport.[13]
