Mörkö resembles a humanoid with a black body and elongated fingers, although this is almost imperceptible within the dark of tunnel B2, which it inhabits. However, its mask is clearly visible: white with dirty and bloody streaks, large mouth and eye holes, and a crushed nose. When nearby, Mörkö emits gutteral groans and heavy breathing can be heard.

Mörkö's appearances are an anomaly and his purpose is left largely unexplained. Only a few notes make references to the rumors of tunnel B2 and "the underground god". In the bridge hideout in isle3, Elo drew a picture heavily resembling Mörkö's mask and a drawing of Mörkö escorting her to the underground city. The most likely theory is Mörkö is one of the seven "masked men" that guard the Machine and seek its ingredients for Raven Research.

Mörkö itself does not appear here, but there are paintings and more murals related to him made by Richard, which can be seen his room.

The first painting has a blurred-out text, which says something like "The Underground God is dead. We need an Answer. Live"
The first painting portrays Mörkö almost like the Ouroboros, although not completely. Text written along the circular mural reads:
The second painting shows an angel-like entity with wings and a green glow in mouth and eyes.

Outside of Richard's room, where those paintings are, a shadow can be seen very lightly. That shadow probably also resembles Mörkö, implying that Mörkö has been there before.

Additionally, an etched silhouette resembling Mörkö can be seen between room G1 and G2. This is reference in the diary of the scientist who lived next to Richard. Directly behind the wall is the hidden computer room, yet the implications of this are unclear.

To spawn him, you must make "Special Coffee".
Stormdrain
The third appearance, and the second time it can be physically seen, is in the MulEx CoPan Coffee Machine area in the map stormdrain. Upon making the "special coffee" (brown and red canisters), Mark's vision will become monochromatic and he'll see a distorted version of Mörkö: it shakes erratically, missing its right arm, and parts of its body look like a damaged machine. The mask's expression has changed to wince as if in pain. Additionally, its mask or face is filled with green mushrooms.

In this sighting, Mörkö looks a bit different: It is missing an arm, parts of its leg, and generally looks hurt/damaged. Additionally, it has green shrooms in its mouth and eye holes.

The shadow is created by a malfunctioning flashlight and it is difficult to determine that it is in fact Mörkö under normal circumstances as it will disappear immediately as the player begins to enter that tunnel. The left one is the model from B2. Here, Mörkö looks pretty much like a normal human, except for its mask and its extraordinarily long fingers.

The right one is the model from the Stormdrain. Here, Mörkö barely resembles model 1 and looks like it has either been attacked or has had an accident. Its head is filled with green shrooms.

The Mask
Upon closer inspection, Mörkö's mask is an actual mask with a dark inner surface. On the outside, the mask has what looks like dried streams of blood running down from its eye holes and mouth. This is shared in common with all three Mörkö models, even the one for Kevin.

It's possible Kevin is in the first stage of transition to becoming a Mörkö, if one is organic.

Speculation
There are two general theories here:

Mörkö is a Living Creature
Mörkö is a living creature, created through shrooms. This would explain the green glow in Richard's picture and the shrooms in its mouth in the third sighting.

Mörkö is a Robot
Or, Mörkö could be a robot/machine. Not only would that explain the "damage" to it in the third sighting, but it would also fit into the description of "The Machine" by Andrew Herts.

Mörkö (Finnish for boogeyman) is a mysterious, threatening entity seen in the tunnels below Stalburg. It and the tunnel it patrols are something of an urban legend in Stalburg.

It may be related to The Machine and Andrew Herts, but its purpose and identity are unknown.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Mörkö resembles a humanoid with a black body and elongated fingers, although this is almost imperceptible within the dark of tunnel B2, which it inhabits. However, its mask is clearly visible: white with dirty and bloody streaks, large mouth and eye holes, and a crushed nose. When nearby, Mörkö emits gutteral groans and heavy breathing can be heard.

Story[edit | edit source]

Mörkö's appearances are an anomaly and his purpose is left largely unexplained. Only a few notes make references to the rumors of tunnel B2 and "the underground god". In the bridge hideout in isle3, Elo drew a picture heavily resembling Mörkö's mask and a drawing of Mörkö escorting her to the underground city. The most likely theory is Mörkö is one of the seven "masked men" that guard the Machine and seek its ingredients for Raven Research.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Bergmann Water Tunnels[edit | edit source]

Mörkö in Tunnel B2.

The earliest sighting of Mörkö is the hallway map (with the Ach question.jpg Achievement).

After entering the tunnel and walking in the only possible direction, the player starts to hear a distorted moan and heavy breathing echoing down the hall. After attempting to open a locked door at the end of the tunnel, Mörkö will be standing right behind Mark, moving its fingers and visibly breathing.

Later on in the Bergmann power plant, a catwalk accessible by the stairs leads to a derelict building overrun with foliage. In a somewhat hidden bathroom, an unsettling mural of Mörkö can be seen.

Mural in an abandoned building.

Bunker[edit | edit source]

Mörkö itself does not appear here, but there are paintings and more murals related to him made by Richard, which can be seen his room.

The first painting portrays Mörkö almost like the Ouroboros, although not completely. Text written along the circular mural reads:

"Underground God is dead. We need an answer! Live!"

The second painting portrays Mörkö as it appears in stormdrain with angelic wings and a green glow in its mouth and eyes.

Additionally, an etched silhouette resembling Mörkö can be seen between room G1 and G2. This is reference in the diary of the scientist who lived next to Richard. Directly behind the wall is the hidden computer room, yet the implications of this are unclear.

Stormdrain[edit | edit source]

The third appearance, and the second time it can be physically seen, is in the MulEx CoPan Coffee Machine area in the map stormdrain. Upon making the "special coffee" (brown and red canisters), Mark's vision will become monochromatic and he'll see a distorted version of Mörkö: it shakes erratically, missing its right arm, and parts of its body look like a damaged machine. The mask's expression has changed to wince as if in pain. Additionally, its mask or face is filled with green mushrooms.

Mine[edit | edit source]

A shadow of Mörkö appears in the abandoned mines section of the powerstation2 map.

The shadow can be seen very briefly seen as Mark approaches a dead end passage where an explorer's note is found and strange labored breathing can be heard. The shadow is formed by a malfunctioning flashlight and will disappear almost immediately as the player begins to enter the tunnel. Using console commands however, one can noclip through to find a semi-transparent Mörkö model that appears when a flashlight, including Marks, shines on it.

Turnip Hill[edit | edit source]

In an apartment on the fourth floor of the first building (the one with the hole in the bathroom wall), there's a locked door at the end of the corridor with mushroom paintings on the wall. Noclipping into this room or unlocking the door with a cheat reveals a room that is empty apart from 36 Mörkö masks mounted on a wall in a 6x6 grid.
