In Obenseuer, player is able to grow and harvest many different plants to use the produce in the crafting or to sell it for profit.

Farms

Player can find farms owned by other NPCs around the world, notably the Kurahaara's Greenhouse, or craft or buy the farms themselves. In greenhouse, player can grow crops for Jomppe Kurahaara using the planting space inside after asking him for a job. Farms can be bought from Möbelmann Furnitures or crafted from fertile soil upon finding an associated blueprints, the player can then place inside Player's Tenement. Farms can have two important modifiers - Sun, allowing to plant crops that need sunlight, and Moist, allowing to plant mushrooms. Some plants also need a Large farm, and aquatic plants (Red Algae, Mussels) need a Water farm.

In the Player's Tenement, player can place farms inside the apartment, in the basement, or inside the dedicated greenhouse on the roof available once player renovates the Stairwell fully. Farms placed near the windows, on the balcony and under the greenhouse roof will have a Sun modifier, farms placed in dark areas away from windows will have Moist modifier.

Special Note: Player's Apartment windows allow the Sun modifier, but after makeshift extension is added to the Right room, that modifier is replaced with the Moist modifier.

Besides regular farms, there are also farms with supports, allowing to grow vineroot plants (like tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers), and farms with UV light, giving a Sun modifier as a substitute for sunlight. A terrarium gives at the same time both Sun and moist modifier and is not affected by the placement inside tenement. All different types can be purchased at Möbelmann Furnitures or crafted upon finding an associated blueprint.

Farms powered by electricity (UV light farms and similar) pause growing when they have no power.

Planting

Crops can be planted from seeds, that can be found in exploration or bought at Kurahaara's Stall, or planted directly from produce, which may not be possible for every type of plant.

To plant, player has to interact E with a farm to open its interface and move the seeds or the produce into the farm's storage, player can now preview the plant they are about to plant and start the process. Plants will now grow for hours, once fully grow, they start spoiling and will be harvestable. Plants own spoilage doesn't affect resulting item's spoilage - a 10% Onion plant will still be harvested for 100% Onion item. Fruit spoilage however does carry over, meaning that a fully harvested fruit plant is likely to produce multiple non-stacking items.

Plants grow around the clock - there is no day/night difference in growth speed.

Failed plantings

Every planted seed rolls a chance to fail, separately for each plant. A failed plant never grows: it starts rotting right away, rots 10 times faster than normal and then has to be uprooted. Since it never grows, harvesting it gives practically nothing - the seed or produce used to plant it is lost.

The fail chance depends on the plant, what it was planted from, the player's Farming skill and how drunk the player is:

  • Every Farming level above the plant's minimum skill lowers the fail chance by 3 percentage points.
  • Below the minimum skill the fail chance rises very steeply - for most plants with a minimum skill, planting 2 or more levels below it fails every time.
  • Alcohol in blood raises the fail chance.
  • The farm's own quality does not affect the fail chance.

Plants without a minimum skill planted from seeds (Turnip, Potato, Carrot, Onion, Lettuce etc.) fail about 1% of the time at Farming 0 and never from Farming 1 up.

Planting from produce

Planting directly from produce (e.g. an Onion instead of Onion Seeds) works for many plants, but has a much higher base fail chance (at Farming 0) than planting from seeds - see Failed plantings for how skill lowers it:[1]

Plant From seeds From produce
Potato 1% 5%
Carrot 1% 10%
Turnip / Sugar Beet 1% 15%
Onion 1% 20%
Cucumber 0.5% 20%
Rye / Wheat 1% 30%
Apple Tree / Blackcurrant Bush 2% / 0.6% 31%
Tomato / Bell Pepper / Peas 0.5% 40%
Leek 1% 50%
Grape Vine 14% 54%

This is why vines grown from replanted fruit often seem to fail - most of them simply roll a failure.

Harvesting

Single-harvest crops (onions, carrots, potatoes etc.) can be harvested before they are fully grown; the yield is then reduced in proportion to how far the plant has grown. A fully grown single-harvest crop takes about a week to spoil in the farm.

To harvest, player has to point and look at the crop and interact with it by pressing E, harvesting is not performed from inside the interface. Terrariums are an exception: to harvest plants from those, you have to use the interface, which is faster. Plants that grow multiple fruits can be fully harvested by looking at the vineroot and pressing E.

Quality of the harvested produce is rolled at harvest from the player's Farming skill (see Skill). Fruits always have Okay quality.

Player can also leave Moldy Piles in-the-world that will grow regular mushrooms in about one and a half month since the pile was placed. Note that if more than 50 mold and trash items (Moldy Waste, Bag of Mold, Bowl of Mold, Paper Trash, Empty Large Plastic Bottle) are lying in one area, the game deletes all of them when the area loads.

Fruiting plants

Plants that grow vertically (and fruit trees and bushes) produce singular fruits that can be harvested. The growth time in the table below is only how long the plant takes to mature; after that each fruit spot runs its own cycle:

  1. When the plant matures, about half of its fruit spots start ripening immediately, the other half wait one regrow delay first.
  2. Each fruit takes its ripening time. Once ripe, it starts spoiling - if not picked in time, it rots away and the spot resets.
  3. After a fruit is picked, the spot waits its regrow delay and then starts a new fruit.
  4. The plant itself slowly spoils from the moment it matures. Once it is 75% spoiled no new fruit starts, and at 100% it is dead and has to be uprooted.

Peas and Cucumbers fruit only once - only the spots that start visible ever produce, and the plant then stays empty until uprooted. Hop picks also give 0-3 Hop Seeds. The farm's efficiency speeds up the plant maturing, but not the fruit timers.

List of plantable plants

Note: this list was pulled from the game files, presence of every plant in the game is not checked.[1]

Note: the growth time is the base time at 100% farm efficiency; it is divided by the efficiency (quality) of the farm. In Kurahaara greenhouse all the plants seem to grow in half the time.

Note: Amount is the average yield of one fully grown plant, including the extra produce that is sometimes returned for replanting.

All plants except mushrooms need a Sun modifier (sunlight or UV light).

Temperature

If player wants to grow crops at Kurahaara Greenhouse, the temperature must be kept at 20°C by keeping the stove fueled. Player's own farms do not need any temperature management in the current version.

Fertilizer and Urea Solution currently have no effect on growing - they can only be sold.

Selling the crops

Main article: Farming Job

Jomppe Kurahaara

Crops grown inside greenhouse, and only those, can be sold to Jomppe by choosing "I have something for you" after asking him about work. Everything grown in the greenhouse is owned by Jomppe, so he will not take produce grown elsewhere.

  • He pays 130% of the item's base value in OC, rounded down for each stack.
  • Quality and freshness do not matter - a crap-quality, half-spoiled tomato pays the same as an excellent fresh one.
  • He takes any Plant-category item plus Hops, but not seeds or Plant Matter.
  • He takes every eligible stack in the inventory at once, including produce the player meant to replant, so put those aside first.
  • Because of the rounding, selling items one at a time pays slightly less than selling a full stack (e.g. 1 Onion pays 3 OC, but 16 Onions pay 61 OC).

Shops

Other crops can be sold to Obenseuer/Shop Vendors: both vegetable vendor and decorative plant vendor will buy vegetables and mushrooms, but their budgets are rather small (<1000 OC). The Kurahaara Brothers Stall buys Plants, Seeds, Fertilizer and Urea Solution at 90% of their value (and sells at 120%), but refuses produce grown in Jomppe's greenhouse.

Unlike Jomppe, shops pay according to the quality of the produce:[1]

Quality 0.25 0.5 0.75 1.0 1.25 1.5 2.0
Price multiplier ×0.34 ×0.5 ×0.72 ×1.0 ×1.56 ×2.25 ×4.0

With high Farming skill, home-grown produce sold in shops can therefore earn more than Jomppe's flat 130%.

Skill

For each planted crop, player gains skill in farming, the higher the skill the better quality of the crops are, and lower the chances are for plants to die when growing. Large farm fields inside greenhouse have a lower skill gain than regular farms.

Skill is gained when planting, not when harvesting, and even when the planting fails. Two things affect how much:

  • Harder plants give more skill. The gain grows with the plant's fail chance - a risky plant gives up to about 4 times the skill of an easy one.
  • Planting many at once gives much more skill. Each plant in a batch gives skill multiplied by the number of plants still left in the batch, so planting 10 seeds in one go gives about 5.5 times the skill of planting them one by one (10+9+...+1 = 55 instead of 10).

Quality is rolled at harvest, roughly as Farming skill × 0.2 with some random variation, and lowered when the player is drunk. A Farming skill of about 5 gives quality around 1.0, and about 10 gives the maximum quality of 2.0. The quality of the farm itself does not affect the produce quality.
